  • The PHMSA research knowledgeBase contains comprehensive studies and technical reports on pipeline safety, integrity management, risk assessment, and reliability. It covers topics such as mechanical damage detection, structured decision-making for risk management, reliability data frameworks, and the effectiveness of safety interventions.

The knowledgeBase emphasizes continuous improvement, data-driven risk reduction, and the advancement of codes, standards, and best practices to enhance pipeline safety and operational performance.

  • PHMSA Incident Data 2010 to 2025  tracks reportable pipeline incidents across the U.S., categorizing them by cause and system type. From 2010 to 2025, excavation damage was the leading cause of serious incidents for both gas transmission and hazardous liquid pipelines, accounting for about 30% of serious incidents and around 16% of significant incidents. Other major causes include corrosion, material/weld failures, equipment failures, and incorrect operation. Incident frequencies and causes differ between hazardous liquid, gas transmission, and gas distribution systems, highlighting the need for targeted risk management and mitigation strategies.

  • PHMSA 49 CFR 190-199 contains U.S. federal regulations governing pipeline safety, administered by PHMSA. These regulations cover a wide range of requirements for pipeline operators, including procedures for enforcement, reporting, and recordkeeping (Part 190); safety standards for natural gas pipelines (Part 192); safety standards for hazardous liquid pipelines (Part 195); and requirements for operator qualification, integrity management, and emergency response.

The regulations aim to ensure the safe design, construction, operation, and maintenance of pipelines transporting gas and hazardous liquids.
